Incumbent Dato Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has effectively sown up one of the 3 positions. Up and down the country he is the front runner, with the UMNO grassroots applauding his tough no-nonsense policy on fighting crime and political opponents.

If Zahid Hamidi's UMNO credentials needed any further burnishing, then his performance at a recent press conference has effectively placed him in the enviable position of being cheered by the 3 main constituents of UMNO - the radical press, the even more radical bloggers and the hoi-poi. During the Press Conference in question, he intimated and sparred with a Malaysiakini journalist leading the UMNO right wing blogger Gerakan Anti PKR to label him as "a true warrior for standing up against a Cinabeng."

Of course the issue was that the journalist was asking Zahid to comment on the statement made by the IGP who remarked that the revolvers and pistols lost by the police had probably dropped into the sea and was not in the hands of a criminals. That sort of reasoning is readily accepted by the mostly narrow minded UMNO bloggers and hoi-poi, even though there are many who would rate such an excuse as "being absurd."

The same cannot be said however of his predecessor at the Home Ministry, the Minister Of Warnings, Dato Seri Hishammudin Tun Hussein Onn. Hisham's rise has been something of an enigma - nobody really knows what he is good at, he has the really weird smirk, he has been trying to curry favour with the ultra radicals for the best part of his political career but has ended up pissing them off no end, he is prone to make absurd comments and generally he is seen as being untrustworthy and perhaps even, "not normal."

All this would of course not explain how this lawyer turned politician is now the incumbent VP and helms two Ministries - the Ministry of Defence and the Ministry of Transportation. Of course, he is the cousin of the current PM, Najib Tun Razak, and an incumbent UMNO VP.

But whilst he cannot be officially sacked from being the cousin to the Prime Minister, he looks odd on favourites to be sacked from being an UMNO VP. Up and down the country, the mere mention of his name is enough to send UMNO members into breaking out with the "Menteri Amaran" jibe. Hishammudin is seen as a weak and shifting leader with perhaps more grassroots "anti support" that support. He is now odds on favourite to finish second last, behind Tan Sri Isa. who will claim the wooden spoon.

But that leaves three candidates - Mukhriz Mahathir, Ali Rustam and Shafie Apdal to fight for 2 positions. The smart money is on Mukhriz to win one of the 2 and I think he has just about sealed it. Mukhriz surged into the races on the back of some strong blogger polls and given that a recently concluded UMNO poll has put his father as the most influential UMNO leader present (even though he technically is only a mere member), it is quite unlikely to see Mukhriz fail. And for the last position, I think Ali Rustam will clinch it because of the game theory I had mentioned. The 3 candidates who think they have the last 2 seats would instruct their men to vote for Ali Rustam because he is the most non-threatening contender.Shadow Bankerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05808674289534888830noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6392451813227969282.post-57486302091032808102013-10-02T07:02:00.000-07:002013-10-02T07:02:04.718-07:00Najib can't meet ObamaWas quite surprised at the speed at which President Obama dropped his plan on meeting the PM in Malaysia. This perhaps is a bit of gamesmanship because Najib has refused to sign TPPA. So now Obama can dangle the carrot of TPPA in front of Najib in anticipation of another state visit.

With respect to the Government shutdown, I would be surprised if it ends early. It seems that the Republicans will try to push this right to the end and maybe even trigger a technical default of the US Bonds.

I would guess the reason is for political legitimacy. The last time they folded too easy and now the markets dont take them seriously. In order for you to be taken seriously, you have to force the agenda - so thats why they will push it all the way and beyond the Oct 17th deadline.

In the meantime, the markets aren't pricing this in. Markets do have a short memory.

With respect to the auditors general report, I really do not see what the fuss is all about. There is absolutely nothing new, and in fact, if the wastages were as small as that, then then its a bonus. No point to go hoo-ha over this. The only thing that could ever trigger a change in the way how things are run is if the Ringgit : Sing dollar crosses 3. Till then, it will be this silly game that is not even worth getting worked up about.Shadow Bankerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05808674289534888830noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6392451813227969282.post-38102076461703459412013-09-29T07:26:00.000-07:002013-09-29T07:26:01.803-07:00Hishammudin's increasingly desperate campaign . Ali Rustam plays the spoillerReaders may have been alerted to DSHH's appearance in one of the Wanita UMNO gathering in Johor picked up blogger Another Brick in Wall over here.

I think its unmistakable that Dato Seri Sharizat was wanting nothing to do with DSHH. The body language is unmistakable, and what's worse, this form of interjection into Wanita UMNO politics may backfire spectacularly for DSHH.

First, this reveals a couple of things. Number one, Sharizat does not like DSHH and thinks that DSHH is a goner. After all she was trying as hard as she could not to be associated with DSHH and for DSHH to go quite 'low' in trying to rub shoulders with Kak Jat makes him lose a lot of prestige.

Obviously, she sees him as carrying too much political baggage. Nobody wants to be associated with the 'ugly boy' of politics and DSHH is right now the person nobody wants to be seen with.

Contrast this with Dato Seri Zahid Hamidi's recent appearance with the WP delegates at the now infamous event which featured Tengku Adnan's call for the delegates to maintain status quo. The Home Minister was completely at ease with his surroundings, and basically displayed something which DSHH lacks which is confidence.

So the smart money is for DSZH to win one of the 3 posts. That leaves two posts left to be contested between the other five contenders. Mathematically, the odds are now of 40% success.

We can perhaps narrow this down with some further analysis. According to the rules, this will be a winner takes all votes for each state - something like the Democratic party convention nomination system. We can firmly say that DSZH will win in Perak, will win in NS, will appear as part of the winning trio in WP, will win in Selangor, will win in Penang, will win in Pahang, and will appear as part of the winning trio in Kedah. So that is 7 , mathematically enough for him to be assured to be part of the winning trio.

As for Mukhriz, he will win in Kedah, will win in WP, will win in Penang, will get the nominations from Selangor. Ali Rustam will win in Melaka.

We know that Hishammudin will not be part of the winning trio in any of the areas which suffers from the crime epidemic. On top of that, he also suffers from areas where there is a strong contender because game theory postulates that the decision will go down for them not to elect Hisham since he is the weakest.

Mathematically, it goes like this. There are 2 slots left for grabs. Voting Zahid Hamidi is a no-brainer, because he is assured of getting one of the 3. So lets say in place like Sabah, the smart thing to do is vote Shafie, vote Zahid Hamidi and vote the weakest person in the third. That means voting Ali Rustam or Isa. In Kedah, the same thing will work as well - vote Mukhriz, vote Zahid Hamidi, and vote the weakest. In Perak, that is where it will be interesting. Given the bad blood between the races and DSHH's perceived weakness, he will just be ignored. In WP and Selangor, the same thing, vote Mukhriz, vote Zahid Hamidi and then split the vote between perhaps Shafie or Ali Rustam.

In Melaka, this is where Ali Rustam's grassroots needs to see whether he can pull off what he needs to do. It must be Ali Rustam, Zahid Hamidi and then club a deal with Mukhriz. Say to Mukhriz, if you vote for me in Kedah, I will deliver Melaka.

In either way, it may now be almost impossible to save DSHH's career. If he is down and out,and so is Isa - who is considered as not seriously offering any threat, then the choice narrows to to Shafie Apdal, Mukhriz and Ali Rustam for the last 3.

Tun Dr Mahathir had officially blamed Pak Lah and KJ for handing 5 states to the Opposition and denting BN's 2/3 majority. After being pressured by the Supreme Council, Pak Lah was forced to announce his impending resignation in the next UMNO assembly and the knives were going for KJ.

KJ had just managed to get enough nominations to sneak into the Ketua Pemuda contest and had been virtually written off by all. Even worse, KJ was almost disqualified from contesting due to money politics allegations. There were even rumours that KJ was going to be hauled up by SPRM.

In terms of the media, KJ was completely sidelined. Utusan was devoting lots of space to Mukhriz and in the blogs, KJ was hammered left, right, up, down and even in a circle. The anti KJ bloggers included whose who in the blog world. It included Rocky Bru, Big Dog, Another Brick in Wall, Husin Lempoyang, Parpukari, Mantra in Deep Thoughts, Syed Outsyed the Box, Duke of UMNO, Cucu Tok Selampit, Jebat Must Die and of course the infamous Piggy Singh.

In the UMNO HQ, the anti KJ forces were lined up from head to toe. Dato Abdul Rauf was one of the main protagonists as well as many others.

And of course Najib too had cut a deal with Tun Dr Mahathir to finish of KJ. Did you not remember Najib giving a massive clue when opening the UMNO Youth assembly with his famous exhortation - "Kita Mahu Pemimpin Yang Berani Berubah" which was seen as slam dunk endorsement of Dato Mukhriz Mahathir.

Azli Shukri - another anti Khairy handiwork

Yet, yet... when the votes were counted - KJ emerged the victor and Mukhriz was the last.

This point must not be lost on Dato Seri Hishammudin, Dato Seri Shafie Apdal and Dato Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi is this - KJ did not win because of luck, but because of a sophisticated counter Mukhriz operation.

We knew where to whack Mukhriz on the blogs and we were the guys in charge of characterizing Mukhriz. We also knew how to play up KJ and how to do a contrast with Mukhriz. We demoralised key staff in the Mukhriz machinery and neutralised emerging threats. In the end we forced the Mukhriz campaign to go down a tract we knew they would end up losing - even though Anas ATM was busy dishing the $$$$.

This was not down to luck and part of a well planned campaign. Ask any blogger - siapa dia Wenger J Khairy and they will tell you one answer. I don't know. Is he Stephen Doss? Is he some Indian guy. Is he KJ himself? Is he a man? Is the person a lady? Is there one of them? Are there many of them?

Right now, we can tell you - this time round Mukhriz is much tougher. Beating Mukhriz is going to be much more difficult BUT we have the formula. We know where his weak points are and we know how to run a powerful subterfuge campaign.

The team has since disbanded but some remain. Serious candidates should consider dropping a line to shadowbanker007@gmail.com . Remember there is not much time, but with the right strategy, if we did it once, we can do it again.

Pemandu what say you?Sources say that Petronas is expected to drop pricing its Tapis blend to the Brent crude benchmark. As this matter involves the Shadow Banker, we must make a comment.

In a short answer - no, no, no.

The plans to drop Brent based benchmark is foolish. Tapis or even a regional derivative based on Tapis just wont make it. This is because the Brent benchmark is highly established and the spreads between various cracks has both active physical and paper markets.

Malaysia cannot go it alone in the world oil market. It must agree to play by the rules and learn how to trade using the established markets. This is also in line with the Government mission, vision and transformation attempts to make Malaysia into a land of "endless possibilities."

The issue that Petronas faces is very simple - to whom will it sell its Tapis blend? Currently, our major oil export destinations are Australia, India, Thailand and Japan. These traders in these region can engage in sophisticated derivative contracts to hedge our oil price IF AND ONLY IF the Tapis is benchmarked to a liquid market like BFOE.

But it we go and say that we are no longer going to respect BFOE then how are the refiners like Conoco Phillips in Australia going to hedge purchase of Malaysian Tapis blend. Furthermore, will they respect our pricing if there is no strong basis to the price. We cannot arbitrarily say that the price of Tapis blend is US$100 a barrel unless there is a strong basis to that. That is why benchmarking to BFOE is a must. I can go ahead and hedge the FO crack, the Gas Oil crack, the regrading spread and so many other spreads only if the paper contract and the physical contract are tied to the same basis.

I believe Petronas cannot go and act without first consulting with Pemandu. In the meantime, Pemandu can engage McKinsey and get them to back up what the Shadow Banker says. Petronas must realise that unless you want to see your oil domestically then there is no other option whatsoever than playing the game others play.
Asta la vista TSMYIts almost certain now that Home Minister Dato Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi will go for the Number 2 slot, following which he will be in pole position to take over from Dato Seri Najib as UMNO President and Prime Minister of Malaysia.

Zahid's popularity has soared on recent months as TSMY's influence has waned on account of his lack of leadership qualities. In contrast, Dato Seri Zahid single handedly won the praise of both UMNO and Non-UMNO citizens with his zero tolerance against subversive elements such as the New Village cineman producers and the Indian Gangsters.

This will mark a major milestone in the political career of the ex one time UMNO Youth Head who was detained by Dr Mahathir's regime in 1998 after the sacking of Dato Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Many people had written off Dato Seri Zahid and thought that his days were over. In fact, even so far as during Pak Lah's reign, Dato Seri Zahid was still considered a rank outsider and not part of the inner power base.

But this changed soon after Dato Seri Najib took over from Pak Lah. Dato Seri Zahid was elevated to the position of Minister of Defence and single handedly battled the Sulu army who had threatened to annex Sabah on behalf of the Sultan of Sulu. He was rewarded for his bravery by being promoted to Minister of Home Affairs where he oversees a vast empire including the police, the RELA and the immigration.

Whereas his predecessor, Dato Seri Hishamuddin was known as Menteri Amaran and basically presided over the biggest increase in crime rates in Malaysia's history, Dato Seri Zahid was a man who brooks no nonsense. He gave the police a free hand to conduct massive operations against the evil Indian gangsters and was unafraid to ruffle more than a few liberal feathers by banning the Chauvinistic film New Village. As a result, the Indian gangster threat is now receding and the New Village backers and financiers are sitting on well deserved losses.

As a Deputy Prime Minister, Dato Seri Zahid Hamidi will accomplish the dream of many by having a person with a strong backbone in the Government. Dato Seri Zahid Hamidi will also accomplish the dreams of many who want to see an end to Dr Mahathir's influence in Government and will not tolerate nonsense from that old man. In contrast, the current occupier of the seat, Tan Sri Muhiyiddin Yassin is seen as a "budak suruhan" to Dr Mahathir and is incapable of forming any independent opinion or thought process.

Dato Seri Zahid Hamidi has already got the green light from Dato Seri Najib to do Tan Sri Muhiyiddin in. After all, TSMY has failed to pledge loyalty to the President and to kiss his hand and the hand of first lady in act of respect and deference. Instead, he has allowed pro Dr Mahathir to insult the image of YAB PM and YAB First Lady by creating a super-imposed picture of YAB PM over YAB First Lady. This was deemed as an ultimate insult to the President and should have been criticised by TSMY and the blogger arrested for sedition. For this insult, TSMY is now seen to have to pay the price.Shadow Bankerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05808674289534888830noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6392451813227969282.post-8838823768493614632013-09-06T06:19:00.000-07:002013-09-06T06:19:37.422-07:00Kasihan Pemandu. Kena belasah kiri kananIt seems Pemandu is in the cross hairs of the pro UMNO bloggers. I think they should be in full blown crisis mode because Dato Seri Najib will follow the pro UMNO recommendation and close down Pemandu. Now got Minister Abdul Wahid, ex-CEO of Maybank to advice DSN. So Pemandu no longer needed lah.
I think people should not complain because PM and Pemandu had long hinted that subsidy rationalisation was on its way. Furthermore, PM and Pemandu have already given RM 1,000 cash downpayment through BRIM and BRIM 2.0.

In the meantime , we must condemn the statement by Fitch in trying to give Malaysia a negative credit rating. If possible, people could consider launching a police report against Fitch because of their negative comment on Malaysia economy. Malaysia economy is now very strong with palm oil price recovering. Under PM Najib and Pemandu leadership we will enter into high income economy and everybody can then buy high power car, like in US where the car is usually very big. Only is that to pay for oil, we have no subsidy. I think it is okayShadow Bankerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05808674289534888830noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6392451813227969282.post-76847673556089922912013-08-30T12:25:00.003-07:002013-08-30T12:25:41.187-07:00ISMAWe break from our usual focus on Dato Seri Najib and the great job he is doing as the PM to comment on a YouTube video released by ISMA in conjunction with the National Day,

In the YouTube video, ISMA touched on several matters that they felt as being important. This included the rise of chauvinism, liberalism, Christianisation and Syiah beliefs. As I am a Christian, I will not touch on matters surrounding Islam.

However, I will touch on the other issues, at least partly.

First and foremost, I note that ISMA's YouTube video has invited some criticism from YB Rafizi , YB Khalid Samad, and surprisingly Dato Seri Ali Rustam as well.

But the main fact is that ISMA is merely repeating what is being felt by most Malays. Its quite obvious and has been mentioned quite openly by most UMNO bloggers. The only mistake, if you could call it such, was that ISMA was verbalizing it.

And that to me is not a mistake. If the majority subscribe to the views, might as well as say it out loud and see how the cookie crumbles.

Basically the issue is there and its either the Malaysian public deals with it or not. To me, the only comment I have on the specific issue ISMA has on the "threat of Christianization" is that the whole polemic could have been sorted and should have been sorted, but has yet to be sorted. And by the way, I completely disagree that the Christians should fight tooth and nail on this issue. It is a case of perceived racial issues disguising itself as a religious polemic issue.

As it stands, I see no issue with ISMA's declaration. I won't support it, because that is being hypocritical, as ISMA has deemed me, a Christian, as a threat. But I won't denounce it either. ISMA is merely repeating what is being felt by Malays by and large. That is the point blank truth.

However, I want to conclude with this and reveal some circumstances that could shed some light.

I work in Singapore and am paid in Singapore dollar. If ISMA favours a policy that makes Malaysia become more backward, and the message is consistent with what pro UMNO bloggers have been saying all along, I will be neutral. After all, Sing dollar Ringgit cross is at 2.65. If the main issues were so easily penned down to those four issues raised by ISMA, then Sing dollar Ringgit cross could go up to 3 or even 4, in five to ten years time. I would have no problem with that.
Irwan made it clear that Dato Seri Najib should resign because in his opinion, Dato Seri Najib had failed to show adequate gratitude to the Malay electorate Instead Irwan accuses the PM of pandering to the non-Malay electorate in spite of them having ditched the BN coalition at the last general election.

Simple, straight to the point and no beating around the bush.

Everybody is entitled to their opinion, as blogger WZWH has said - "dalam Malaysia semua bebas bersuara, semua bebas berdemo." Irwan made it very clear and there is no subtleties to it, no hidden messages, no nuances - just a straight ultimatum.

To which he has been condemned somewhat by pro PM politicians and bloggers. The most vocal of the critics was the UMNO Youth Head, Khairy Jamaluddin who hammered Irwan by accusing Perkasa Youth of having no local standi in politics and even denigrating the Perkasa President, Ibrahim Ali, for not even being able to win a parliament election. In the blogging world, a few of the small minor blogs have lambasted Irwan, but most of the major top ranking blogs have kept quiet. Instead, they are more focused on playing up stories that criticise the PM's advisers and advisory bodies.

News to them - Dato Seri Najib orders advice he likes and shuns advice he does not like. He is completely Western in his outlook and shares 0 commonality with Tun Dr Mahathir. He chose those around him to be like him and not to be like someone else. The advice he gets is the advice he wants, attacking his advisers is akin to attacking him.

But the pro UMNO bloggers dare not attack him directly because right now there is no "dollar" win. As it stands, Dato Seri Najib will be returned as UMNO President and to attack the President will mean an end to access to UMNO and the ability to make some money on the side. Thus economic arguments have caused them to instead engage in a "dirty war" whereby they invite commentators to attack Najib in the comment box as they feed them with the necessary ammunition.

Most of this ammunition stems from their "dissatisfaction with the PM's advisers." Okay, lets be specific - which exact policy introduced by Dato Seri Najib's Pemandu club has been the cause?

The answer - ZERO.

If you want to disagree with Pemandu, at least name a policy . What is it do you disagree with them? Which policy introduced by the Government has caused a loss to the Malay community? I can tell you - the answer is ZERO because no way can that policy be presented in Cabinet without being shelled into pieces by the other Cabinet Ministers.

So stop with the dramatics and answer the simple question. Are you with Najib or against him.Shadow Bankerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05808674289534888830noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6392451813227969282.post-30096284012757803682013-08-28T05:33:00.002-07:002013-08-28T05:33:37.218-07:00Cucu Tok Selampit must stop criticizing the Prime MinisterI have said this a couple of times to blogger Cucu Tok Selampit to stop criticising the Prime Minister but he still insists on doing so. The criticisms are usually subtle and designed to provoke the people into losing trust with YAB Dato Seri Najib Tun Razak and the 1 Malaysia - Endless Possibilities message.

Bloggers must practise self censorship and not criticize the PM after he has single handedly won a mandate from the people. In fact, bloggers must learn to consult the media machinery as to how to write or if possible, enrol in approved courses before writing their thoughts on the Internet.

Kuala Lumpur Criminal Investigations Department chief Datuk Ku Chin Wah had reportedly denied any link between the car-smuggling ring in Langkawi and Shaharuddin’s murder.
“The reports are just mere speculations,” Ku had said (Pautan)

Disini kita nak memberi pandangan.

Ada diantara kita yang mendakwa jikalau orang bukan Melayu, bukan Islam seperti gua mengkritis kerajaan ianya sebab kita ini begitu iri hati, ataupun ingin merendah-rendahkan martabat orang Melayu Islam ataupun, sebab gua ni berugama Kristian, kerana kita hendak mengKristiankan negara.

Tetapi kalau kita mengiyakan alasan Ku Chin Wah ianya memberi gambaran tahap pendidikan kita setakat budak darjah satu.

Already, there has been a slow undercurrent gathering against the incumbents. Eventhough most state liason committees have set the resolution for a "no-contest" for the top 2 posts, there has been increasing chatter that both the Number One and Number Two post will be contested.

The feelers have already been sent out and Tun Dr Mahathir is busy orchestrating his final move before the inevitable happens. He knows that his son needs to fight this election out and can either aim for a Vice Presidents post or even the Deputy Presidents post.

The calculation for the Vice Presidents post is quite difficult. It has often attracted too many heavyweights and Mukhriz's credentials as Menteri Besar of Kedah may cause him to be stuck with just the Kedah vote. Furthermore, this will see big wigs like Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Hishammudin Hussein Onn, Musa Aman and other senior Cabinet ministers make a play. Lastly of course, the post of Vice President is rather ceremonial and does not add anything to Mukhriz's prestige.

Like it or not, Mukhriz has to aim for the No 2. That may be a bold gamble but he has shown himself capable of taking on gambles and winning. The question remains whether Mukhriz should take on Muhiyiddin or whether a Mukhriz - Muhiyiddin combination should take on Najib - Zahid for the top leadership slot?

Off hand, Mukhriz will stand a better chance against Muhiyiddin on a one-on-one contest. Actually TSMY's grassroots support is virtually non-existent and the only reason he became Deputy Prime Minister was because of the tacit support by Najib and Dr Mahathir against lesser opponents like Tan Sri Muhammad Muhammad Taib. So I would rate Mukhriz to prevail against TSMY quite easily.

Mukhriz greatest asset is that he controls the social media. As this is going to be a mass market campaign, he who controls the media will win. And in the same breath, I'm confident of Dato Razali prevailing against Khairy should he decide to go for the UMNO Youths post. Khairy has not learnt to develop his own media machinery to take on the powerful social media assets assailed against him and still prefers to network through the political "operatives" method. This works well if its 2,500 plus delegates deciding on your future. Works like crap if your up against a nationwide election.

Perhaps if TSMY had not already realized it, he better now. Tun Dr Mahathir is never one to take the slow way in getting things done. He will go for the jugular and since TSMY lacks the gumption to take on his boss, Tun will then turn his guns on TSMY. And in return for Tun not openly attacking the PM, Dato Seri Najib will give the green light and for this and TSMY will be toast. Funny isn't it, when for so long it was TSMY who was threatening to do a number on his boss, but ends up being 'taken out' in a classic UMNO style shadow politics plot.
As he surveys the country, either from the pristine grounds of Seri Perdana or whether on the ground mingling with people from all races and all backgrounds, a sense of unease overcomes Malaysia's 6th Prime Minister. Having tasked himself with uplifting a third world nation into the leagues of a high income, mature and modern society, instead he finds his attention drawn to comment on many needless "win-lose" issues.
Meet Malaysia's 6th Prime Minister - Dato Seri Najib Tun Razak.

As a man, even his political enemies admit that there is little to dislike. His affable personality and easy going nature has won him many friends as he slowly climbed up the ranks in UMNO and Government. On his way to the top, Dato Seri Najib had served in many different capacities, as the Chief Minister of Pahang, Youth and Sports Minister, Minister of Education, Minister of Defence, Deputy Prime Minister and finally culminating in being sworn in as Malaysia's 6th Prime Minister on the 3rd of April 2009.

When he became Prime Minister, Dato Seri Najib wasted no time in outlining his vision. He was boldly going to challenge the status quo and mediocrity in the country and stated that on his watch, he will take Malaysia from wandering the no man's land of middle income serfdom into a high powered dynamic economy. He recruited the smartest brains in the country into a think thank unit called Pemandu, which would provide the policy input required to transform the nation. Pemandu's task was to implement the vision through a well detailed and well thought of plan. Nothing was left unanswered nor up in the air. The target was clear - achieve per capita income of USD 15,000 which would meet the World Bank definition of a High Income society.

The plans Pemandu came up were bold and brand new. The plan required every Government Minister to deliver on the respective Key Performance Indicators. Nothing was sacred and everything was open for transformation. "People First. Performance Now" was the ethos of the Najib administration.

5 years on and now Dato Seri Najib faces a different kind of headwind. The economic policy is iron clad in terms of its logic and requires liberalisation so that foreign companies are willing to invest and so develop local expertise. An open , transparent and just society required that suspected criminals be given the right to a fair trial which led to the abolition of repressive laws such as the Emergency Ordinance and the Internal Security Act. Such tools gave the holder immense power, but Dato Seri Najib was willing to sacrifice power for principle.

But those moves are now being roundly criticised, unjustly perhaps. People whom Dato Seri Najib had appointed to positions of power and influence have turned on him because they feel threatened and challenged by the bold transformation moves. Disgruntled elements in his own party, UMNO, are beginning to emerge from the woodwork to incite his Deputy to challenge him at the upcoming party elections. But when pressed for an actual and definitive answer as to why Dato Seri Najib has deemed to have failed, they come up short or offer simplistic excuses.

One such excuse is that BN did poorly in the last General Election. That is complete rubbish as the party wrested away 2 key states, Perak and Kedah that was lost to the Opposition Front in 2008. More ever, UMNO, the party of which Dato Seri Najib presides over did tremendously well in spite of its image of extreme corruption, feudal nature and arrogance. The reason for UMNO's strong showing need not any Merdeka laced analysis - for it was Dato Seri Najib's picture on the billboards urging voters to give him the mandate for him to take the country forward.

But nothing is quite so simple in Malaysia. Politics is a 24 hour business and does not thrive on vision, hard work and excellence. Politics instead is a dirty power play game as those who are interested in securing personal power are driven by jealously and begin to incite wide spread angst against the Najib administration. All manner of flimsy excuses are offered but none have any concrete substance.

The source of this attack are usually a few. They are born of a different generation, where the rules of the Cold War made it easy to understand who are allies, who the enemies of the allies were and how to trade one against the other. They grew up a time when the focus of economic growth was towards Asia, making any Government look good as economic growth came together with low inflation.

But today times are different. We live in a multipolar world with extremely complicated trade flows. At the start of the year, Asia was heralded as the force that will drive the global economy in the light of weakness in the United States and a deep recession in Europe. Today, the same countries that saw massive capital inflow are witnessing exactly the reverse and suddenly the world has declared that a new crisis is imminent. Such extreme volatility requires leaders who are flexible and not those who are rigid. These require leaders who define the situation and not leaders who are defined by the situation. These require leaders who seek allies and not leaders who seek to blame others.

In that sense, these times are made for Dato Seri Najib. And in great tribute to the man and to the country, the President of the United States has decided to honour Malaysia and Dato Seri Najib with an official state visit slated in a couple of weeks time. This is a historic occasion never before bestowed on Malaysia and reflects the great strides Dato Seri Najib has made on the international front. Now if only, the rancid voices in his party could return the favour.

We start by examining the news surrounding the shooting of 5 suspected criminals in Penang late last week, presumably by Unit Tindakan Khas (UTK) Officers of the Royal Malaysian Police.

The response to this news has been divided. On one hand, many welcome the move, especially since there has been a spike in incidences of violent crimes throughout the country. On the other hand, there are some who decry the raid and accuse the police of deliberately killing the suspects without offering them a chance to surrender.

I have personal first hand experience of the cruelty of gangsters. These guys are mean and violent. They kill, maim and destroy without any regard for the other man. And judging by the bold display of gang paraphernalia during the funeral of the slain suspects, it is almost virtually impossible for them to be considered as innocent victims of police brutality. The funeral procession which was held in Butterworth was straight out of a Hong Kong crime drama and the "04" gang sign was prominently displayed on the hearse.

But the question remains is why stop now? Taking out 4 gangsters may make a lot of news but does not change the dynamics of the crime situation at all.

Like it or not, Malaysia is ruled by the mobsters. In fact, the ex-IGP himself said that criminals have strong links with politicians (see link here). Actually, the link is quite insidious because sometimes these criminal gangsters can have a wide "grassroots" network and politicians tap into the network in order to get their party representatives elected.

The Home Minister himself has said that there could be up to 250,000 criminals active in Malaysia at this moment, a number which beats the number of police and the armed forces. Minister Zahid bases this number on the assumption that on average each of the 2,500 EO detainee heads a gang of approximately 100 members. The logic is suspect, but personally the number is not far off. I think if you travel to Sibu, you would probably witness first hand how strong the gengsters are in that part of the world. The procession in Butterworth shows how strong they are up north. I would think we definitely have something like more than 100,000 gangsters, involved in stuff like drug trafficking, smuggling, extortion, illegal money lending, prostitution, car jacking, and now even, contract killing. Compared to a population of 30 million, this works out to a ratio of 1 gangster in 300.

The median forecast of economists have the GDP number at 4.7%. The number itself is just a number and unless it is really bad , like under 4%, it will be largely ignored. My consensus forecast is for GDP Growth to be at 3.8% for Q2 13, as the collapse in the external sector will be unable to offset any pick up from domestic consumption.

In terms of the currency market, the Ringgit has sold off against the Dollar, partly due to the rising US dollar exchange rate and Treasury interest rates that reduces the yield pick up from doing repo based carry trades. This has been inline with the sell off in other regional markets as well with a general repatriation of cheap dollar liquidity back to the good ol USA where they can rest in relative comfort of 10 year yields touching 3%. (As to how they will hedge the price risk of an increasingly volatile 10Y is another matter altogether but perhaps they can lock in a positive carry by buying Interest Rate calls to coincide with the holding period).

The reason behind my bearish consensus is the apparent collapse in the net exports. For the period of Jan to March, net exports was already weak at RM 16.3 billion. But it got worse over the months of April and May, where net exports was a weak RM 3.4 billion. As the trade balance regionally has worsened over June, I do not export this number to have picked up and my final estimate is Net Exports at RM 6 billion for the quarter. That works out to a shortfall of RM 10 billion for the quarter, which can't simply be conjured up through domestic consumption.

Does this mark a beginning in the reversal of the so called "Asian econmic miracle?"

I think so because the old model of the West being a profligate consumer society buoyed by cheap credit and willing to buy any old thing produced in Asia has come to an end. The Western consumer is in retreat and the days of raking up personal debt at unsustainable levels are over. Asian countries like Malaysia cannot merely rely on foreign labour working in the factories, producing TVs, microchips and kettles for an overstretched Western consumer.

The question then becomes - the 2 magic words you will surely see plastered all over tomorrow's news release : DOMESTIC CONSUMPTION.

On the surface, growth from Domestic Consumption does not look bad. 5% growth that comes about because people buy more Proton Sagas and consume more food cannot be separated from 5% growth that comes from exports of the latest technology. But here in lies a catch - Domestic Consumption is only possible so long as there is a source of funds to provide credit to the economy. This source has to be strictly exogenous (i.e. from outside Malayia) unless of course, we are willing to see a reduction in terms of Investment (or "building new houses and office buildings"). And if we do reduce the volume in building houses and office buildings, that by itself reduces the chain volume of GDP as building houses and new buildings constitutes a component of GDP called "Investment."

So over an extended period of time, Domestic Consumption as the "engine" of growth is only possible if we run a surplus capital account - i.e there are people out there willing to fund our excess spending. In a strange twist of fate, one of the biggest funders of this actually came from good ol' Uncle Sam, because of the excess dollar liquidity floating around in the US Banking system without any good credit assets to acquire. But with US Dollar interest rates starting to rise up, Malaysia will need to pony up and raise its interest rates if it wants to attract this source of funding.

This may sound like complete news to most unsuspecting Malaysians, who have grown up in the closet race filled world. That a country like Malaysia actually relies on US dollar funding to support its own consumption patterns. Surely that's impossible?

My answer to that : RM 27 billion or 3% of GDP. That is precisely the increase in foreign holding of Malaysian Government debt from 1Q13 to 1Q12. This number excludes foreign holding of corporate debt or other Malaysian issued debt instruments. When foreigners buy debt, they provide the funds necessary for our Government to pay salaries, BRIM and other spending. So the situation already exists and given we have a structural deficit, it is not going to change anytime soon. (Unless they introduce GST!)

In the interim of course, local banks can easily step in to buy up local Government debt but that reduces their ability to make nice chunky mortgages at much higher spreads. And the second thing is that since the debt is projected to hit RM 1 trillion in about 5 years time, this method of bank led funding is simply unsustainable.

We now come to the crux of the matter. We operate three economies in Malaysia. The first is the external sector which is now going to go the way of the typewriter and become obsolete. We operate a services and domestic consumption sector that takes a lot of raw inputs, from sugar to iron to manufacture goods. And lastly we operate a domestic megacomplex called the Government which structurally spends more than it taxes.

Without a source of cheap funding the following can and will happen

1. Interest rates rise
2. Currency depreciates
3. Commercial real estate gets hammered.
4. Banks begin to suffer loan losses.
5. House prices depreciate as speculative borrowers cannot make payments
6. Consumer gets hammered.
7. Full blown banking crises

Among the reasons cited are a general loss in confidence in the country, religious polemics between the various faiths and upsurge in crime.

The campaign against Dato Seri Najib has some similarities and some differences with the similar campaign launched against Dato Seri Najib's predecessor, Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi that led to Tun Abdullah Badawi's subsequent resignation both as Prime Minister and UMNO President ironically in favour of Dato Seri Najib. The similarities are that both campaigns use the social media channel to engender lack of confidence with the PM and are being waged by those who are pro Dr Mahathir in their outlook. The major difference is that right now the campaign against the Prime Minister lacks any single leader. Tun Dr Mahathir has yet to make public his support for a change in leadership at the top and Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin is well out of the public limelight.

Instead, the agitators for quite stuck in what they can do. Without any single leader, the campaign is still being conducted in a guerilla warfare style and the focus of the attacks are being concentrated on the Prime Minister's circle of advisers as opposed to the Prime Minister himself.

Given these circumstances, it is clear that Tan Sri Muhiyiddin is waiting to see whether he gets sufficient nominations from the UMNO branches as the validation for him to take on his boss. With this, Tan Sri Muhiyiddin can argue that the pressure for the change came from the grassroots and was not down to his personal political ambitions.

But here in lies the catch. He just won't get the nominations required. By and large, the UMNO branches assemblies will be a strictly controlled affair and many will not want to see a major contest at a stage when UMNO is quite weak. Dato Seri Najib will be returned as President, Tan Sri Muhiyiddin as Deputy. Tan Sri Muhiyiddin simply has too much to lose for him to overtly lend his support in the campaign against his boss. His team lacks the grassroots, the money and the machinery to conduct this. Of course, this was in stark contrast to his actions as Minister of International Trade and Industry, when he publicly lambasted his previous boss, Tun Abdullah, and acted as a "wingman" to Tun Dr Mahathir's campaign against the then Prime Minister Abdullah Badawi.

A second reason is that UMNO right now is in an extremely fractured state. Local divisional level politics dominate the order of the day as the division politics is what that matters. Because these are the mechanisms in which the small contracts are dished out and play a key role in UMNO's system of politics of patronage. In this present day scenario, divisions that openly call for a change in leadership run the risk of being blackballed in getting patronage from the top. So from a game theorist view, its a virtual certainty that the President will be returned unopposed. In fact, I would think it is much more likely for Tan Sri Muhiyiddin to face a threat for the Deputy President's post that it is for Dato Seri Najib to face a credible threat for the President's post. This possible scenario has also led to Tan Sri Muhiyiddin publicly disassociating himself from any campaign against the Prime Minister, for fear that the PM could turn the guns on him.

Even though the PM is unlikely to be challenged officially within the party, he will leak support from the population as a result of this "dirty war". The policies crafted by his Government are being questioned and blamed for everything from the spike in murder cases to the rise in Shia'a belief among Malaysia's majority Muslim population. While this may not have the effect of changing the balance of power in the country, it could lead to a continued loss of confidence amongst the population which could lead to greater social strife and further fracture an already divided society.Shadow Bankerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05808674289534888830noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6392451813227969282.post-3042782718986724582013-08-03T03:11:00.000-07:002013-08-03T03:11:02.773-07:00The Bankers Verdict - Be Patient and Be ThankfulI read with interest Dato A Kadir Jasin's recent article entitled Ok for Rocky to be angry. Having lived in Malaysia for 10 years and right now working in the heart of the financial centre of South East Asia, I can share some perspective on the perceptions about crime in Malaysia as viewed by the folks over here.

Firstly, I think the New Paper article was spot on and accurately captures the issue in Malaysia. Many people over here have already decided to skip Malaysia and prefer to go to places like Bangkok for their holidays. Tales of being mugged at car parks and enduring kidnappings in Johor is well known to many.

The bad news is crime in Malaysia is not going away any time soon. It is here to stay and is a product of a many short term decisions that have been taken over the last 20 years. From enabling foreign workers to come in by the millions resulted in many locals being displaced from their jobs and having to settle for meagre salaries. The only viable option was to engage in black market activities, and this has led to a thriving underground industry that penetrates the highest levels of Government.

Now before you accuse me of just throwing out accusations, this is exactly what none other than the ex Inspector General of Police himself said not too long ago.He said the following over here : - "“Looking at the present situation, where there is a lot of illegal activities, do you think there is no links? You can answer yourself,” he told a press conference where he was named patron and advisor to MyWatch yesterday.

He revealed that there are cases where the links are too high up and “nobody dares talk about it”. He cited a case of a high-ranking police officer he did not name who was brought overseas for golfing by a “shady businessman”.

“Sometimes I feel they can even dictate officers, sometimes even spend [money] on police officers,” he said. "

But because he said something against the Government, the mass media automatically block it. Bloggers buat do-no and the situation continues. Last week we had 2 major shootings, which led to the death of the founder of the Arab Malaysian banking group. This week, there was a couple more shootings. Maybe next week, the assassins will go on holiday and there will be less shootings.

But I think it is grossly unfair to blame this on Dato Seri Najib and his decision to repeal the Emergency Ordinance. And I think it is unfair to blame this on Pemandu.

Here is the reason why.

Pemandu is staffed with very well qualified consultants who are among the top in their cohort. They are there to fill the policy void that has existed because most policies crafted by Government departments lack the overall critical thought process to take Malaysia forward. To trust the EPU is laughable as under successive DG's it has lacked the vision and insight to make meaningful contribution in a post Mahathirst Malaysia.

Pemandu's strength is its reliance on very indepth analysis before making policy decisions. Many of the circumstances that have led to the explosion in crime i.e. weakness in policing, breakdown of social order, influx of immigration and widespread corruption were there before Pemandu came about. In fact, only after PEMANDU was set up was there any serious efforts to get down to the root of the issue.

So in as far as it takes 10, 20 or even 30 years for the situation to resolve, then the citizens of Malaysia must be patient and be willing to wait for that to happen. It is not as if the situation is very bad, as PEMANDU's Index Crime statistics have pointed towards a downward trend. The police also has stepped up their vigilance According to PEMANDU, index crime has decreased by 10% from January to May this year.

The solution to this takes time. Already PEMANDU has come up with its vision for GTP 2.0 and the area of crime has been given special focus. The NKRA for Crime right up is under ex Police boss, Datuk Wira Ayub Yaccob who will give added dimension in this area.

To highlight GTP 2.0, you can read here about the following areas where PEMANDU has identified as being key in order to tackle crime.

Will this prevent further high profile crime from happening? Will this ensure that you don't get mugged? Will this make you safe?

In the short term, probably not. In the long term, maybe. And that is about as good as answer as you can expect, but be thankful the situation is not as bad as it is Thailand or Indonesia, and do not try and compare yourselves against first world economi.

Shadow Bankerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05808674289534888830noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6392451813227969282.post-7169180093423813182013-07-28T00:10:00.002-07:002013-07-28T00:52:28.592-07:00The Sri Pristana IssueOk first of all, I am doing this out of therapy. Perhaps somewhat similar to Life of Annie.

Some background must be order before we proceed so that readers will know the exact circumstances of my opinion and dismiss or accept it accordingly.

Ethnically I am for all purposes Indian. And the dark skin variety.

So with that most important disclosure out of the way, let me offer my opinion on this issue.

The Seri Pristana issue came about when Madam Ganeswari Kelly made the following post in her Facebook account.

The above image has become the defining picture post GE 13. Most people who view the picture instantly recognise it and then are tuned to make known their opinions without much rational thought. On this issue, there seems to be 2 camps, the first one being those who are mad with the school authorities and agree wholesale with Madam Gunasweri and the second being those who are completely mad with Madam Gunasweri and support the school headmaster, Mohd Nasir Mohd Nor.

When this issue first hit the news wires, my initial opinion was to believe Mdm Gunasweri. But as I am working in Singapore, I was not completely bombarded by this issue so my opinion was still perhaps quite fluid.

But I do take exception with some of the comments made by Mdm Gunasweri :

Dear friends do u hv feeling n sense of humour. Is it fair for a sekolah kebangsaan sri pristina treatment our non Muslim children like this during puasa month. They restricted our children to go canteen becoz they will dirty and gave them bilik bersalin n mandi for rehat. They quanteen them not to go out from break. Is this fair? Can school treat like this. No food serve n no canteen. That bathroom is full of bacteria n smell becoz its a bathroom n next door toilet with the horrible smell. When we ask they keep sending to another bathroom n store place. As a mother I m in teas n sadness. My child in mess at Malay School. Y the parties n no body voice out. How many times we need to run. No STOP FOR THIS!!! My dear malay friends do u think this fair? Can ur Allah accept this? Making our children in suffers. This wat 1 Malaysia is it??? Pls help me some plss. I need help my child suffering at that room whenever her break. Our complaints no taken in school in keep doing same.

Her comment is provocative. It is designed to provoke a reaction. Personally, I find the one in red is totally unacceptable. There is no reason to mention it.

Before we go ahead, on hindsight let me offer my opinion why Gunasweri's comment was right and wrong.

Gunasweri's comment was right if she intended to provoke a reaction. Almost overnight, this issue blew up and became national headlines. Everybody commented and we once again were faced with a case of Malay vs Non Malay, Muslim vs Non Muslim.

Gunasweri's comment was wrong as a citizen and resident of Malaysia. Even though this story has many angles, I want to focus the rest of my piece on why I come to that conclusion.

First some background for the benefit of readers.

As an ethnic Indian, like it or not, I am only part of 8% and less of the population. Even worse, as an ethnic Indian I will be prejudiced with some of the many stereotypes associated with Indians. Number one - over dramatic, number two - emotional, number three - lying, number four - dark and ugly, number five - acting without thinking, and in general "unMalaysian." These are common streotypes associated with Indians and by my mere appearance I too will be subject to it.

The point is that this stereotype did not emerge out of the blue. There has been some basis to it and it must have been reinforced in society over and over again through the interactions with Indians both great and small by members of the non Indian community.

In this regard Gunasweri does give a case one example of this. She has decided to make this a racial and religious issue when the real issue is not that at all. The real issue is that the school has decided to make a changing room as the makeshift canteen. Gunasweri objects and feels strongly about it. She wants to force the school to open up the canteen. The school refuses. She then surmises that the reason behind it must be race and religion discrimination.

She has now lost objectivity in her cause.

This is no longer going to be about not being able to eat in a canteen but instead a battle against perceived racial and religious posturing. This is no longer going to be against the school management of Seri Pristina but against the wider Malay and Muslim community in Malaysia.

I think now it should be clear why Gunasweri is wrong. She like me is only 8% of the Malaysian community, and on a percentage basis we will decline faster as the influx of Bangladeshis and Myanmarese migrant workers changes the population dynamics.

I don't know about you but no way can 8% win in anything. Its like 1 against 12 and those are odds that just do not work.

So if we as Indians and non Malays and non Muslims in general insist on making every issue into a racial and religious issue in order to pit us against the Malays and the Muslims, then we are on this extremely stupid trajectory. Like it or not, Malaysia emerged from a Malay land. Like it or not, we came from a very different background. Like it or not, we should adapt to the Malay culture rather than having the Malay culture adapt to us.

And in the Malay culture, there is this unwritten code of not blowing up an issue. If you think about it, virtually every single issue that has happened over the last 4 years plus emerged when non Malays tried to assert their "non Malayness" to the wider Malay community in Malaysia.

This to me is plain stupid.

If the school has been adamant in closing the canteen, then so be it. We can take it up at the PIBG and offer constructive arguments why it is better for the canteen to be open rather than eat in a shower room. Or perhaps most importantly, we can tell our children - TO STOMACH IT.

Yes - TO STOMACH IT. Because in truth, this is the lesson Indians have to learn. We have to learn how to smile when people are rude and not get emotional. If we continue to get emotional, people will continue to refuse to deal with us and we will continue to get emotional.

Can you see that this is a never ending cycle?

Personally I love Malay food and am hardcore fan of assam laksa. I speak extremely well Malay (after all I am the infamous Sir Wenger Khairy). When I am stressed out in Singapore (which happens on a weekly basis), I flee to Mersing to chill there by the seaside. I go to Malay restaurants, patron Malay enterprises, engage in banter and then head back home. If I ever use the "Pasport chop lane" I always make it a point to address the immigration officers as Tuan or Puan. And lastly, I would probably want to open up a shop in Mersing or Kuala Trengganu once my stint in Singapore is over.

After having been on this land for almost 200 years, lets learn to adapt to Malaysia. After all, we were granted citizenship by a benevolent society, so the least we can do is to repay this kindness with a change of attitude.

PS: I used to eat my lunch in a shower room when I was in Junior College. The reason was that my shirt would smell strongly as the canteen was not well ventilated.

I want to start this blog by talking about the man in the picture. The one, the only Dato Abdul Azeez Abdul Rahim, the new Chairman of Lembaga Tabung Amanah Haji (LTAH).

His elevation to the position of Chairman has met with some fierce critics within the party, with some rabid pro-BN bloggers openly questioning his appointment as being without merit and retrogressive for the Tabung Haji. This subject has been fiercely debated especially at the Big Dog blog such as over here, at the Brick blog over here as well as other places.

Most of the attacks right now are the classic ad hominem attacks, making fun of his Indian Muslim ancestry or his education qualifications as an MBA graduate from Preston University. In terms of the quality of the attacks, it is usually empty, hollow and lacking any depth in the matter.

So let's discuss this in a more matter of fact way. Lets consider what is required of a Chairman of LTAH and whether Dato Azeez fits the bill. In that way, we can argue this matter out thoughtfully and rather than rely on stereotyping.

As a Chairman of an investment fund, Dato Azeez will Chair the Management Committee meetings that discuss the operational matters of the fund. This will include things like logistics, customer service, operations and Human Resources. He is not the Chair of the Risk Management Committee (Tan Sri Dato Hashim Meon) or the Chair of the Investment Management Committee (Datuk Azizan Abdul Rahman) or the Syariah Advisory Committee (Tan Sri Dato Dr Abdul Shukor Husin). All of the above committees require special expertise in areas of risk management, investment analysis or syariah compliance. Dato Azeez is not serving on those functions, in fact he does not even sit in any one of those committees and their decisions will be independent of his influence.

His role is to provide the "human capital" input to LTAH whilst Dato Paduka Ismee Ismail can concentrate on the more strategic and investment matters. In this regard, Dato Azeez comes well qualified because he has undertaken so many logistic operations in support of humanitarian missions. He will know first hand what is required to move thousands of people and the required logistics support. In that regard, he comes much better equipped than any MBA grad out there because he has first hand experience.

This is the area of supply chain management. It is completely different from Investment Management and requires a person with in-depth knowledge in planning and co-ordination. Stuff like this is not made for bankers, it is made for "get your hands dirty" kind of people who know the nuts and bolts of the operations.

These are just some casual observations I have made. Dato Azeez is not going to override the CEO, the CFO or the other experts in the areas of the expertise. Instead his role is to ensure that contributors to LTAH are well taken care off and the necessary support operations are in place. Stuff like that does not require theory but instead years of practical experience. In that regard, few will doubt Dato Azeez's strength in that matter.
