Gengster Squad - Will this line of reasoning hold?

We start by examining the news surrounding the shooting of 5 suspected criminals in Penang late last week, presumably by Unit Tindakan Khas (UTK) Officers of the Royal Malaysian Police.

The response to this news has been divided. On one hand, many welcome the move, especially since there has been a spike in incidences of violent crimes throughout the country. On the other hand, there are some who decry the raid and accuse the police of deliberately killing the suspects without offering them a chance to surrender.

I have personal first hand experience of the cruelty of gangsters. These guys are mean and violent. They kill, maim and destroy without any regard for the other man. And judging by the bold display of gang paraphernalia during the funeral of the slain suspects, it is almost virtually impossible for them to be considered as innocent victims of police brutality. The funeral procession which was held in Butterworth was straight out of a Hong Kong crime drama and the "04" gang sign was prominently displayed on the hearse.

The grand funeral procession of three of five friends linked to the 04 Gang passing through Jalan Mesjid Negri in Penang yesterday.

But the question remains is why stop now? Taking out 4 gangsters may make a lot of news but does not change the dynamics of the crime situation at all.

Like it or not, Malaysia is ruled by the mobsters. In fact, the ex-IGP himself said that criminals have strong links with politicians (see link here). Actually, the link is quite insidious because sometimes these criminal gangsters can have a wide "grassroots" network and politicians tap into the network in order to get their party representatives elected.

The Home Minister himself has said that there could be up to 250,000 criminals active in Malaysia at this moment, a number which beats the number of police and the armed forces. Minister Zahid bases this number on the assumption that on average each of the 2,500 EO detainee heads a gang of approximately 100 members. The logic is suspect, but personally the number is not far off. I think if you travel to Sibu, you would probably witness first hand how strong the gengsters are in that part of the world. The procession in Butterworth shows how strong they are up north. I would think we definitely have something like more than 100,000 gangsters, involved in stuff like drug trafficking, smuggling, extortion, illegal money lending, prostitution, car jacking, and now even, contract killing.  Compared to a population of 30 million, this works out to a ratio of 1 gangster in 300.

We hope that Minister Zahid can take out Geng 04 and all the Gengs that are running amok throughout the country. Use the MP5 if required.

I pray that the Malaysian Police be very careful in executing this order. We do not want you to be hurt, we do not want any 'innocence civilian' to be accidentally hurt or killed as well. I also pray that the Politician who gives this order, to keep holding the brake. Giving flexibility to this unit is not a laughing matter. They are trained to shoot and ask later.
